Why Zoos Are Gradually Replacing Traditional Metal Mesh with Stainless Steel Cable Netting

Pain Points of Conventional Materials

Galvanized welded mesh, chain-link mesh and solid steel bar railings were widely adopted in early zoo enclosures:

  • Galvanized steel mesh: Prone to rapid corrosion and rust failure under humid conditions, together with exposure to animal faeces and urine. Rust debris carries heavy metal hazards. Frequent repainting and full replacement are required, driving up long-term maintenance costs. Weld joints are the weakest points, prone to breakage and creating animal escape risks.
  • Solid steel bar railings: Obstruct visitors’ sightlines, resulting in a poor viewing experience. The heavy barrier creates a confined, stressful living environment for animals, which conflicts with the design philosophy of modern immersive exhibits.
  • Standard welded mesh: Vulnerable to joint failure when animals charge or collide. Its rigid, hard surface also causes cuts and abrasions to animals upon impact.

Stainless steel cable netting serves as an advanced alternative for zoo enclosure retrofits, species-specific exhibit partitioning, auxiliary segregation and internal habitat infrastructure.

The key advantages of stainless steel cable netting

Superior Corrosion Resistance

Available in AISI 304 and AISI 316 stainless steel grades with outstanding corrosion resistance.

For general outdoor settings, AISI 304 stainless steel offers excellent cost performance. It withstands weathering, rain exposure and UV radiation. For coastal, high-humidity and heavy salt-spray environments, AISI 316 stainless steel — alloyed with molybdenum — delivers superior corrosion protection.

Consistent Mesh Opening & Flexible Net Panel

Mesh openings can be customized according to animal body sizes. Properly sized openings lower the risk of animals trapping their limbs and sustaining injuries. Careful selection of mesh opening and cable diameter also avoids unnecessary cost overruns and resource waste caused by improper specification choices.

The net is constructed from multi-strand stainless steel cables via knotted or hand weaving. It is supple and resistant to snapping. When animals collide against it, the net absorbs impact energy to prevent injuries.

High Air & Light Permeability, Unobstructed Views

Boasting a high open area ratio, the net allows excellent airflow and light transmission. Unlike solid bar railings that create a confining feel, it delivers an enhanced viewing experience for visitors and aligns with the design philosophy of modern zoo exhibits.

Eco-friendly & Non-toxic, Low Long-term Maintenance Cost

Stainless steel is chemically inert and free of toxic leaching, complying with zoo safety regulations. The material is reusable and causes no environmental contamination. The smooth net surface allows easy cleaning and rinsing. With superior rust resistance and a long service life, frequent replacement of net panels is unnecessary.

Classification of Stainless Steel Cable Netting

Two main types are available: stainless steel woven net and stainless steel ferrule net.

Stainless Steel Woven Net

Fabricated by twisting and weaving multi-strand stainless steel wires, it features diamond-shaped meshes with a 90° opening angle.

Stainless Steel Ferrule Net

Made from stainless steel cables twisted from multiple steel wires. The intersecting cable joints are crimped and secured with stainless steel ferrules. It has diamond meshes with a 60° opening angle for a more stable mesh structure.

Common Grades: AISI 304 stainless steel, AISI 316 stainless steel

Surface Finishes: Natural stainless steel finish, black oxide finish

Cable Constructions:

·         7×7: 7 fine wires per strand. Highly flexible, commonly used for aviary enclosures and small primate exhibits.

·        7×19: 19 fine wires per strand. Higher breaking strength and excellent bite resistance; the standard option for large carnivore projects.

AISI 316 stainless steel contains molybdenum, which greatly enhances its resistance to chloride ion corrosion and pitting corrosion. It delivers outstanding corrosion performance in coastal and high-salt-spray environments with high chloride levels.

Black Oxide Finish for Stainless Steel

Black oxide treatment is not dye adsorption, dip staining or pigment coating on the surface. It is a chemical conversion colouring process. The black colour comes from black composite oxides formed in-situ on the substrate surface through chemical reaction, known as conversion film colouring.

This treatment generates no harmful substances to animals, and the layer will not peel or flake off.

Specifications of Stainless Steel Cable Netting

Available cable diameters: 3/64″, 1/16″, 5/64″, 3/32″, 1/8″.

Available mesh openings: 0.8″, 1″, 1.2″, 1.5″, 2″, 2.4″, 3″, 3.6″, 4″, 5″, 6″.

The cable diameter directly determines its maximum load capacity. When selecting cable diameter and mesh opening size, you should match them to the body size and strength of the target animal species to minimize escape risks.
